The Gastric Balloon
is a saline-filled silicone balloon
with a radiopaque valve that can be seen on x-rays.
An operation is not required for this procedure.
The inflated
Gastric Balloon floats in the stomach meaning that persons feels
satisfied, like after eating, and only a small amount of food
makes the person
feel fulfilled. This restricts the appetite and thus aids
with weight loss.
The Gastric
Balloon system is run in parallel with a diet and the average
weight loss is some 3 Kilograms per week.
Placing the
Gastric Balloon in the stomach is done
with a light anaesthetic. It is placed through the
mouth and the oesophagus, down into the stomach. It
is suitable for patients who do not wish to undergo obesity
surgery.
